Sound Energy Activity One: Sound and How it Travels

To learn more about sound, we are going to investigate what sound is and how it travels.

In your science notebooks, be sure to record:

  1. The materials we will be using (you can draw pictures if you like)
  2. The procedure we followed for the activity
  3. Your prediction for what will happen
  4. Your observations
  5. What worked, what could work better and what you learned from the experiment

Materials:
  1. Coffee Can
  2. Tuning Fork(s)
  3. Strikers (if necessary)
  4. Water

Procedure: What is Sound?
*Make sure to record the answers to each question in your science notebook as well as any questions or observations you make*

  1. Using the striker (if needed, if your tuning forks do not need strikers, tap them on a hard surface).  What happens to the tuning fork?  What do you see?  Do you hear anything?
  2. Tap the tuning fork again, this time place it against the palm of your hand.  What do you feel?
  3. Close your palm around the tuning fork.  What happens?

After striking the tuning fork, place it against the palm of your hand.

Close your palm around the tuning fork
Procedure: How Sound Travels

  1. Fill the coffee can 1/2 full of water.
  2. Strike the tuning fork and place the two tines on the surface of the water in the can.  What happens?
  3. Strike the tuning fork again and place the bottom of the handle against the water on the side of the can.  Record your observations in your science notebook.  What do you see?  Hear? Feel?
  4. Strike the tuning fork and place the bottom of the handle on the surface of the table.  What do you see? Hear?
  5. Strike the tuning fork again, place the bottom of the handle on the surface of the table and place your ear on the table.  What do you feel?  Hear?
  6. Strike the tuning fork and place the bottom of the handle on your forehead.  What do you feel?  Hear?
Fill the coffee can 1/2 full with water
After striking the tuning fork, place the two tines against the surface of the water
After striking the tuning fork, place the handle of the tuning fork against the side of the can where there is water
